In 1818, Francesco Peroni was born in a small town in the north of Italy.
In 1846, he established the first Peroni brewery in Vigevano, still bearing his name to this day. By 1864 demand was so high, that Francesco’s son Giovanni built a second brewery in Rome to cope.
In the 1950s, Birra Peroni started its phenomenal growth, and soon became the biggest Italian brewery. It was under the leadership of Giovanni’s nephew Carlo that our brand, Nastro Azzurro, was created in 1963.
Carlo chose the name Nastro Azzurro carefully. It means “Blue Ribbon”– the name of the prize given to the ship that crossed the Atlantic in the shortest time. The beer was given this name in honour of the SS Rex – the only Italian ship to have received the award – in 1933. Peroni Nastro Azzurro is also a symbol of premium quality and distinction – values that Carlo
wanted his new premium lager to embody.
In 2003, SABMiller purchased a majority stake in Birra Peroni, and in 2004 the latest addition to the SABMiller global portfolio emerged – Peroni Nastro Azzurro.
In March 2005 the brand was launched in the UK and the USA and has since gone on to achieve success in over 18 markets spanning 5 continents.
